What are we doing and where are we going?

This is a short-term mission mobilization effort planned and run through several Converge Northwest churches. We will be joining three other churches and taking a group of no more than 100 students and leaders and heading to Tijuana, Mexico. While there we will be working and staying with Caravan Ministries, building houses for the impoverished people who are settling there and ministering to the locals through various projects and gifts. We get to represent Jesus through service to people while growing in our relationship with God and one another. While in Mexico, we will be staying at Caravan’s dormitories and at a church in San Diego while in the United States. 

 

It is important to note that some parts of this trip will reflect the experiences from Serve 2019, but other elements will be different- this is not the same trip or experience and there will be intentional efforts taken to allow this to be a different trip for those who join the team. Students who attended Serve 2019 need to understand the difference of the experiences and allow this team and their experiences to develop organically. Differences between the two mission trip experiences already include housing at Caravan, a smaller group with less participating churches, and time in San Diego.

 

 

Why are we doing this?

We want to develop world class Christians by providing firsthand exposure to cross-cultural missions. This trip will provide a unique and unparalleled experience for students to encounter the God who came to serve and save the lost. We can make a significant contribution to ministry through practical ministry involvement and hard work. Through this experience, we want to develop disciples of Christ in such a way that they become devout followers of Jesus as well as active servants in their communities.

 

 

Who can participate?

This mission trip is for high school students. Priority for admission will be given to current seniors and juniors (classes of 2021 and 2022), followed by sophomores (class of 2023), then freshmen (2024) in a three-tiered approach. Depending on the size of the team and available spots, there may be an opportunity for recent graduates to join the team in a student/leader hybrid position. We will also be recruiting several adult leaders to join on the trip and serve as team leaders during training and on the actual mission trip experience.

 

Regardless of current grade, there are several important requirements for all students who are interested in applying to join the team and be part of this mission trip experience:

 

  • Personal Requirements:
    • Public confession of faith in Jesus and an active relationship with Him
    • Dedication to serving God, His people, and the lost
    • Consistent attendance in Northview Student Ministry services and events, as well as regular Impact Group attendance and involvement

 

  • Practical Requirements:
    • Complete an application and interview with NVSM Leadership Team
    • Adhere to the rules of the mission trip and authority to all leadership
    • Commit to participating in all preparation, orientation, and fundraising events

 

 

 

 

 

What will it cost?

The total cost for Mission ‘21 will be $1250 per student participant (leader cost is $750). This includes round trip airfare to California, transportation and housing within California and Mexico, building materials, program materials, and nearly all meals during the trip. Not included within the cost are personal items such as spending money ($100 max) and miscellaneous supplies (work gloves, personal hammer, sunscreen, etc…). There will be opportunities for fundraisers, support letters, and additional means for raising funds. 

 

 

What is the next step?

If you are interested in learning more about this trip you and a parent need to attend one of our upcoming interest meetings. These meetings are for student who are interested in participating, as well as adults interested in leading, and others who want to learn how they can support and pray for the trip. Students who are interested in learning more do not need to attend both meetings as the same information will be shared at both meetings Registration is required to aid in the preparation of materials and can be done via the Church Center app or online. The dates and times for the meetings are October 18 at noon and October 25 at 4pm. Please note: attending the meeting does not guarantee a spot on the trip but is the first step in applying for this incredible opportunity to represent Jesus to people in need and experience Him in a new way. Applications and other important information will be provided at this meeting. 

 

We are currently moving forward with the planning and preparation for this trip. However, given the current state of the world, especially in regard to COVID-19, NVSM leadership reserves the right to cancel the trip or adjust the destination at any time. This is not a simple decision by any means, more information on what this would entail will be available at the interest meetings. We are hoping for Mexico but open to where the Lord may lead us- what a great lesson in leaning into the Lord and being obedient to His calling for His disciples!
